Chemical Reactions Lab

In our chemistry class, we were given a lab on chemical reactions. We had eight reactions to perform; these reactions fell into 5 categories:

  •  Synthesis: Two reactants come together to form an element
  •  Decomposition: A substance is broken down into two substances.
  •  Single replacement: An element replaces another element in an aqueous solution.
  •  Double replacement: Both elements replace one another in an aqueous solution.
  •  and Combustion: A substance reacts with oxygen to radiate light and heat.
My favorite reaction that we performed was combustion. We set methanol on fire  and watched as it burned to nothing.
  • Methanol + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + water
  • CH3OH + O2 = CO2 + 2H2O
